Govanhill Community Markets

On 25th September 2021, 12-4pm, we hosted the first Govanhill Community Market led by G42 Pop-Ups in partnership with Govanhill Baths Community Trust. The project aims to: Strengthen connections between diverse communities of Govanhill Support the local economy Activate underused parts of the neighbourhood.

The market had a focus on sustainability in its wider sense (social, environmental, economic) with this event linking to the Scotland Sustainability Summit, Climate Fringe Week, Glasgow Open Doors Days and Harvest Festival that also took place in September. The target audience was local residents, including families, young people and older generations.

All market holders were locally-based: Tenement Veg / Glasgow Community Food Network; Milk Café / Romano Lav; Flower Bakery / Madame Soleil; Chib Bakery; Flutter Studio; Caitlyn Johnston; Leo Valenti; Indre Simkute; Nahida Parvin; Greater Govanhill Magazine; Al Khair Foundation.

In addition to the market, we programmed free events and activities such as workshops and performances: Family ceramics workshop Our Restaurant at the End of the World led by local children’s arts and education charity Rumpus Room; Roma dance demonstration and workshop led by Sonia from Romane Cierhenia; Choir performance by Govanhill Voices community choir; Music performance by local music ensemble FIRKA; Climate Frisk – interactive workshop to help develop an understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change.

Supported by Glasgow City Council’s City Action Plan – Animating Spaces Fund, Historic Environment Scotland, Museums Galleries Scotland and Govanhill Baths Trust.
